Walter Burley on Supposition of Terms
The study deals with Walter Burley’s semantic theory of supposition. It is primarily based on the longer version of his crucial logical treatise De Puritate Artis Logicae, while in some significant respects it also takes account of his early De Suppositionibus. The main aim of the study is to give a detailed analysis and interpretation of the part of his theory of supposition which is usually labelled as “the doctrine of supposition proper”. A secondary aim is to point out some problems which Burley’s theory of supposition has to cope with.
